"Niǎn Xuě Jí" - a study on Guqin
In December 2004, Voyager 1 became the first human-made object to explore the heliopause. In September 2013, the probe left the heliosphere and is expected to approach another star within 40,000 years. A gold-plated LP record accompanies the probe, containing data selected by astrophysicist Carl Sagan. Among them is a recording of "Liu Shui," performed by Guan Pinghu, an iconic piece of music for the Guqin, a Chinese seven-stringed zither with a long oblong body that serves as a resonating chamber for the strings running the full length of the instrument.
This book documents the history of the Guqin, its origins, its manufacturing processes (sound engineering and materials), its symbolic significance in different schools of Chinese philosophy, and shares the private diary and the testimony of contemporary artist Zhu Zi about his relationship with the instrument.
